Jen Benson

I learnt to run as soon as I’d mastered walking and never really stopped. Running has always been a passion – a constant throughout life’s many and varied adventures. It’s shaped me as a person and a mother, it’s underpinned my career and research, and it’s introduced me to many incredible people and places. I owe a lot to running, and there’s nothing I love more than helping others find the same kind of joy it’s brought me.

My early years as a runner revolved around bettering my PBs on the road, with some adventure racing, mountain marathons and Ironman triathlons thrown in. But discovering trails and ultras opened up a whole new world of adventures, taking me across the UK and to the Alps exploring and racing. Some recent highlights include finishing on the podium at the Limitless Trails Black Mountains 50-mile, and completing the Arc of Attrition 100-mile and Ultra Trail Snowdonia 100k.

I’ve always been fascinated by the science of running. I have a master’s degree in sport & exercise medicine specialising in distance running and I’m in the final stages of a part-time PhD exploring running endurance. I’m a UESCA certified ultrarunning coach, a qualified mindful sports performance enhancement practitioner, and have a diploma in personal training. I have a particular interest in the female body in running, including working with the menstrual cycle, running through (peri)menopause, and the complex and wonderful balancing act of being a mother and runner. I’ve also written a number of books about running, and regularly write for Runner’s World magazine and the national press.

My coaching approach is highly specific to each athlete’s needs and goals: an evolving process that’s adaptable and flexible around the demands of a busy life, based on the best available science and many years of learning and experience. I love coaching people at every stage of their running journey, maximising the joy and value of every session – whether that’s intervals, a big day out exploring the mountains, or an all-important rest and recovery day.
